When everybody's somebody, then no one's anybody.

Gilbert got that right in Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Gondoliers."  But never mind.  In the free-for-all for a declining number of interested students, colleges and universities are trying to be all things to all students.  Instead of evaluating strengths and weaknesses and playing to their strengths, too many schools are trying to do it.  This takes resources.  And the pie just ain't big enough to satisfy all our appetites.

The University of Akron's announcement yesterday that delving into online learning big time will solve its problems is only the latest example of this foolishness.

I pointed out yesterday that Capella and Strayer are apparently bucking the downturn in the for-profit sector of higher ed by finding their niche markets --- grad ed in Capella's case and corporate partnerships for Strayer.

This, I believe, is what will work.  Not offering very more certificates, every more majors, every more compressed and accelerated programs that only erode the quality of the product we are trying to sell.
